I grew up by the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. At low tide, the bay is full of clay patterns, often surreal and embedded in lunar-looking mud slabs. At high tide as the basin fills up, the sea takes on the undulating curves of the surrounding dykeland. As a kid these transformations were magical and provided a wonderful place to play and explore.
As an adult this sea canvas stayed with me long after I moved away from home. I missed it and ultimately the missing drew me back. Today I walk the dykes most days, and try to capture the shoreline using a palette knife, oil on canvas. There’s something about this rhythmically familiar yet always changing seascape- the comfort of the familiar mixed with endless possibilities of transformation. A safe harbor to begin again and see life anew.
